What to do after an invoice reminder gets no response

No reply does not tell you whether your client has paid, missed the message or is waiting on someone else. Reconcile your records and check the email address before following up.

Refer to the previous message

Keep the reference, outstanding balance and earlier contact date together. Ask for a payment date or the right finance contact. Avoid forwarding a growing chain without explaining the action you need.

Subject: Following up — invoice [reference]

Hi [Client name],

I’m following up on my reminder of [previous message date] about invoice [reference], due [date], with [amount and currency] outstanding. Could you share the expected payment date, or let me know who handles this invoice?

If you’ve already paid, please disregard this message. Thank you, [Sender].

Choose the next check deliberately

Use your existing payment terms and client relationship to decide timing. An example check at seven days overdue is an organizational prompt, not a universal rule or a claim that it will recover payment.

Change course when the facts change

Stop if paid, disputed or a new payment date is agreed. Record a new agreement and set your next check around it. If there is still no response, review your contract and appropriate professional advice rather than inventing collection powers or late fees.

Create a free reminder. For organized variants and a manual tracker, see the optional $9 one-time follow-up kit (purchase currently unavailable).
